Quiet Time

Who says TV rots your brain?? I am not a proponent of killing one's television. I like TCM too much, for one, and for another Owen and Aidan would be sad to miss Caillou. This winter saw a bit more tv than is probably good, but now that our days are filled with more sunshine we've been going longer without watching (the DVR is a big help, too). This photo reminds me of watching Saturday morning cartoons (a tradition long gone now) and the block of painting shows that used to be on Sundays. I loved watching Bob Ross painting his "happy trees" and "big ol' mountains." And of course, Sarah and I would get to rent videos some weekends and we'd watch the same movies over and over and over: The Point, The Three Amigos, and Franco Zefferelli's Romeo and Juliet come to mind most readily.

We didn't have a sweet caterpillar chair to sit in, but we did have the old furry beanbag!

Some of my favorite memories are times when we sat around as a family and watched shows together. Family Ties, the Cosby show, and late Star Trek (yes, I admit it.) It was also really special when we got to go to the movie store and we spent to whole day watching B movies like Red Sonja, or classics like Willow and The Princess Bride, and having picnics on the living room floor.
Coincidentally, it is TV turn off week at Maddie's elementary school. If they choose to participate, they can't watch TV the whole week and as a reward they get an extra recess. Woo hoo. An extra recess. But what about our Netflixed Cosby show?

It is the same the world over. I relate to all that too (even the same shows). What a beautiful photo, it could be Kaylee and Lachie lying there fully absorbed in TV - a scene from many loungerooms. I'm a huge fan of TV (in moderation) as they can learn so much. Kaylee is only 3 and she can count to more than 30, she knows the days of week, all her colours and much more that she learn't from her favourite shows on the telly. I think you just need to be selective in what you let them watch and not let that be all they do.
You have the sweetest little kids!
